This year Francois Villard was probably the busies This year Francois Villard was probably the busiest guy at Decouvertes with his large portfolio of wines. And what wines were those! Again proving his position in northern Rhone. It’s amazing how he can deliver quality and showing terroirs with so many labels. Always great to taste his wines and have a chat with him - there’s true passion and energy within this busy gentleman. Here are my picks from the tasting at Decouvertes: François Villard Version Saint-Peray 2023 Full-bodied with pronounced apple and pear fruit. Medium weight, good freshness. Mineral and yeasty finish. François Villard Mairlant Saint-Joseph 2023 Saline and dense with marked minerality. Taut and structured, with notes of vanilla and crème brûlée. Satisfying and layered. François Villard Les Terrasses du Palat Condrieu 2023 Very fresh and aromatically classic with pears, peaches and a touch of minerality. Clean and expressive. Benchmark Condrieu. François Villard Poivre et Sol Saint-Joseph 2023 Floral with cherry and berry notes. Medium-bodied, fresh and peppery, with smoky, stemmy character and a hint of licorice. François Villard Le Gallet Blanc Côte-Rôtie 2023 Elegant and floral with vivid fruit. Silky palate, fine tannins, and a touch of sweetness on a long, graceful finish. François Villard Grand Reflet Saint-Joseph 2016 Mature Syrah with fig, forest berries, sweet spices, and a touch of pine. Menthol lift, firm tannins, and freshness. It is run by Sébastien Michelas together with his son, Kylian. The estate combines modern winemaking techniques with sustainable vineyard practices to produce precise and terroir-driven wines. Very good discovery at Rhône earlier this year and one to watch in the future. Bellegrapière Crozes-Hermitage 2023 A lively red with a hint of black pepper over ripe red fruit. Juicy and fresh on the palate, with soft tulip-like tannins, a pinch of salt, and subtle umami notes. Les Pichères Crozes-Hermitage 2023 Floral and expressive with notes of violet and dark fruit. Hints of coffee and chocolate add complexity. The palate is rich and juicy, featuring cherry, raspberry, fine tannins, and a long, mineral finish with a touch of salinity. Chapon Crozes-Hermitage 2023 Intensely fresh and structured. Packed with dark fruit, violets, and a touch of menthol.
